Island Creek Oyster Bar Boston

By -

We had a special evening planned for our final night in Boston. Prior to attending the Battle of the Sox at Fenway, we made reservations at a restaurant known for their outstanding maritime delicacies served on the half-shell. The Island Creek Oyster Bar.

Conveniently located a couple short blocks from Fenway Park, it’s a fantastic location to enjoy some seriously good seafood before catching a game. And the fun and energetic environment is my type of place for a little pre-game tailgate party!

In addition to an interesting wine list and a dozen or so cool craft beers, the menu at Island Creek is focused and well thought out. Since we knew we were going to gorge ourselves on oysters, our server was nice enough to split our appetizer and entree in two so we could save room for the undisputed stars of the show.

Our crustacean loving daughter ordered a shrimp cocktail – and the shrimp arrived looking more like little lobsters! Enormous, yet very sweet and tender. We also went with an interesting version of our old fishhouse standby, Lobster Bisque. This soup featured butternut squash, brown butter and lobster knuckles. Very rich, decadent and satisfying.

For our entree, we just had to order the Lobster Roe Noodles. Combining sweet and smoky grilled lobster meat with shiitake mushrooms, pecorino and wait for it…braised short rib! This dish takes the surf and turf concept to new heights. Highly recommended.

And saving the best for last, we enjoyed some of the best oysters we have ever eaten. And the whole vibe at Island Creek screams oysters. From the impressive array of live oysters at the sprawling bar, to the thousands of shells lining the walls, the atmosphere makes you feel like you died and went to bivalve mollusk heaven.

Now I’ve enjoyed my share of Maritime Province oysters like Malpeques, Blue Points and Wellfleets – but I always look forward to broadening my oyster horizon by trying other varieties. Some of our favorites from Island Creek were the Beach Point, Moonshoal and Chatham. All were super fresh and super delicious.
