Samana Dominican Republic Vacation Review: Beaches, Snorkeling & Resort Experience

By -

After a very hectic 2011, we were really looking forward to our annual end-of-year winter getaway. We’ve been fortunate to visit several Caribbean islands, along with various areas of Mexico, over the years. This time, with our daughter having developed some impressive swimming skills for a 5-year-old, we thought a snorkeling vacation in the Caribbean would be the perfect fit.

Is Samana Dominican Republic good for snorkeling and beaches?

Samana in the Dominican Republic is one of the best destinations for snorkeling and beaches in the Caribbean. It offers crystal-clear water, vibrant marine life, and less crowded, more natural beaches compared to Punta Cana. Resorts like Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo provide direct beach access, making it an excellent choice for families and travellers looking for a relaxed, affordable all-inclusive vacation.

Why We Chose Samana Over Punta Cana

After doing some research on the best snorkeling destinations in the Dominican Republic, we discovered that the Samana area is known for its calm, clear water and incredible coastal scenery. We had previously visited Punta Cana and loved the wide beaches and resort options, but we were looking for something a little different this time.

Samana kept coming up as a destination that felt more authentic and less commercialized. Compared to Punta Cana or La Romana, there are far fewer large-scale resorts, which gives the area a more relaxed, natural feel. From a marketing standpoint, it’s still somewhat “undiscovered”—and honestly, that’s a big part of the appeal.

As someone who loves the ocean, beaches, and anything water-related, I was sold pretty quickly after seeing photos and reading reviews.

First Impressions of Samana’s Beaches

We’ve been lucky enough to experience some stunning beaches across the Caribbean, including Antigua, St. Martin, Aruba, Varadero, and Grenada—but Samana genuinely surprised us.

The beaches here are on another level.

Soft sand, clear turquoise water, and lush greenery surrounding the coastline—it almost feels untouched compared to more developed tourist areas. The biggest difference we noticed right away was how quiet and uncrowded everything felt. No long rows of packed beach chairs, no constant noise—just space to relax and enjoy the setting.

If your priority is beautiful beaches and swimmable ocean water, Samana absolutely delivers.

Our Stay at Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo

We ended up staying at the Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo, an all-inclusive beachfront resort. We’ve stayed at other Bahia Principe properties before and have generally had good experiences, so we felt comfortable booking this one.

While the resort is marketed as a 5-star, most travel sites rate it closer to a 4-star—and that feels fair based on the amenities.

That said, there were definitely some standout positives:

  • The property is clean, well maintained, and beautifully laid out
  • The beach access is excellent—arguably the best feature
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming

Where it felt more “4-star” was in the food, gym facilities, and overall activities, which were decent but not exceptional.

Still, when you factor in the price, the value was very strong.

How We Research All-Inclusive Resorts

Like most travellers, we always do our homework before booking. For this trip, we relied heavily on platforms like Tripadvisor, Expedia, and Redtag.ca.

One thing we’ve learned over time is to look at reviews in context—especially when it comes to price. A resort might not be perfect, but if it consistently delivers a great experience for the cost, that matters more to us than chasing a true 5-star luxury stay.

El Portillo scored well across the board, particularly for beach quality, service, and overall value—which aligned with exactly what we were looking for.

Our Take on 4-Star vs 5-Star All-Inclusive Resorts

Over the years, we’ve developed a pretty simple rule when it comes to Caribbean all-inclusive vacations—you don’t always need to go 5-star to have an amazing trip.

In fact, we often find the differences aren’t as dramatic as you’d expect.

Many 5-star resorts are massive properties, and while they offer nicer rooms and upgraded food options, the experience can sometimes feel less personal. Service can vary, and you may end up walking long distances just to get around.

For us, the priorities are simple:

  • A beautiful beach
  • Clean, well-maintained resort
  • Friendly, helpful staff
  • Good overall value

If those boxes are checked, we’re happy.

We’re not spending much time in the room anyway—we’re there for the ocean.

Eating Healthy at an All-Inclusive (Or Trying To!)

Let’s be honest—buffets and beach snack bars can be dangerous.

It’s incredibly easy to overdo it and come home feeling like you need another vacation just to recover. We try to keep things somewhat balanced by sticking to simple, fresh options whenever possible.

Breakfast is usually fruit and eggs. Lunch and dinner lean toward grilled chicken or fish, with vegetables when available.

The biggest challenge? Avoiding the constant temptation of pizza, burgers, and fries by the beach. If you’re not careful, those swim trunks can start fitting a little tighter by the end of the week!

Final Thoughts on Our Samana Vacation

Overall, this trip exceeded our expectations.

Samana delivered everything we were hoping for—beautiful beaches, great snorkeling opportunities, a relaxed atmosphere, and solid value for an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic.

We came back feeling rested, recharged, and already talking about where to go next.

Of course, leaving behind 30-degree tropical weather and returning to the cold and snow of London, Ontario wasn’t exactly easy.

But for now… it’s back to reality.
