What Happens in Vegas…

When most people think of Las Vegas, they think of Sin City. Proudly advertising the slogan, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”, this popular travel destination obviously targets a younger, party hardy demographic. But more and more, Las Vegas is becoming a popular city for families to visit. While most of the nightlife definitely caters to a more mature crowd, there is certainly loads of fun things to do with your children too.

We visited Las Vegas with our 5 year old daughter while travelling this past March. With the 3 hour time difference, we were more than happy to start our day early and head back to our room before things started to get crazy on the strip. There is really no shortage of entertaining things to do for families in Las Vegas. Here are some of our favorite attractions you can check out when visiting with your kids.

1. Touring the resort properties. Its really hard not to be dazzled by some of the Las Vegas hotels, both during the day and during the night. Some of the places that stood out for us were the Bellagio, the Venetian, the Palazzo, the Wynn and the Mirage. You could literally spend hours walking around the Bellagio. From the Botanical Gardens, to the Fiori di Como glass exhibit, to the famous musical fountains – there is lots to entertain both young and old. Strolling around the shops at the Venetian and Palazzo is also pretty cool. With the winding canals, faux clouds and gondolas drifting by, its a pretty tranquil and almost heavenly environment for shoppers. Other attractions worth checking out with your family are the Mirage volcano, the MGM Grand lion habitat and the pirate battle at Treasure Island.

2. Walking the Las Vegas strip. As mentioned, things take a decidedly mature turn as the sun goes down in Las Vegas. From scantily clad show girls and drunken Disney characters hanging out for photo ops, to the annoying escort girl cards being passed out and littering every corner, you might spend a considerable amount of time covering the eyes of your little ones. But during the day, there are quite a few fun and G rated street performers and attractions to keep you entertained as you stroll the strip.

3. The shows! A big reason people come to Las Vegas is to catch some top notch performances. And thankfully, there are numerous options that are suitable for children. Popular family-friendly shows include Blue Man Group, JabbaWockeez dance troupe and our personal favorite – the Cirque du Soleil performances. On this visit, we caught the Beatles LOVE at the Mirage. For anyone that hasn’t experienced a Cirque du Soleil show, it will be one of the most fun and exciting evenings of your life! We had heard that LOVE was probably the best Cirque show to see in Vegas and we were not at all disappointed, Only in the fact that the show had to end! Awesome Beatles music and incredible costumes, dance and acrobatic sequences. What more can you ask for! Highly recommended.

4. The food!  As third degree black-belt foodies, we are always excited to visit Las Vegas – an absolute mecca for outstanding restaurants. Every style and type of cuisine is represented in this town, and we were sure to make reservations at some of the most heralded eateries in Sin City. Stay tuned for future posts with all the delicious details from our Vegas culinary journey. For now, back to the cage.
